The Dumb Things I’ve Done For Horses
My love for horses has lead me to do some pretty…. unconventional things. And usually, at the least opportune times. But I do it because, well, I love the animal.
There was one summer when my new Thoroughbred stopped sweating out the blue. Living in Florida, this became an urgent problem. I was funneling as much salt and Guinness beer into him as I could at each feeding to help him sweat. So on my lunch break one afternoon in August, I swung by the grocery store near my office to load up on supplies in anticipation of heading to the barn later that evening.
I stacked three cases of Guinness into my cart without a blink of an eye, like I was some frat dude prepping for a St. Paddy’s Day celebration. As I was checking out with the cashier, I was horrified when someone in line behind me tapped my shoulder and said my name.
It was my boss.
He had a salad in his hand… a very normal thing to buy around 12:30 p.m., on a weekday. He looked at my three large boxes of cold, bottled beer and went silent.
“It’s for my horse,” I tried to explain.
“Uh huh.” He said in response.
