Retro Riding Trends That Should Make A Comeback
Fashion trends come and go, even in the horse world.
There are some trends we never hope to see again (so long, breeches fabric that just doesn’t stretch… tall boots without zippers – see ya!… maybe those old velvet helmets, too…) and others that we think fondly back on and secretly hope they make a comeback one day.
Heels Down Mag editors took a trip down memory lane to remember some of our favorite riding fashions from generations past that we totally would still rock today… if we could.
Rust Breeches
I mean, there’s even a hashtag – #rustbreechesmovement – so we know we’re not alone here. Why the hunters gave up rust breeeches for the traditional (and boring) beige, I’ll never know. How glorious would it be to see these guys make a full-on return in the show arena?
Monogramed Ratcatchers
I’ve got to say, I don’t miss keeping track of those removable ratcatchers back in the day at the hunter shows. However – I do miss how fun it used to be to color-coordinate and monogram them. The new show shirts are sleek, and honestly much cooler with new fabric technology. But I do miss the little pop of flair a tasteful monogram offered.
Full Chaps
You heard me. FULL. CHAPS. Remember the days of riding in jean shorts and chaps? There’s nothing more nostalgic than that for me personally. Full chaps never totally went away, but they definitely faded into the background in the hunter/jumper world. But I’m holding out hope for their sweet return.
Half Pads in the Eq
When I was in high school, it was all the rage to whip out a fluffy fleece half pad and matching fleece open-front boots for the equitation divisions. But that trend seemingly dried up, giving way to the more traditional hunter pad looks. Occasionally you might still spot one at a show. It makes me excited that the trend could come back for another wave.
