Product Review: Happy Horse Coffee For Horse Girls

Before I head to the barn, there’s one staple I must have or else I can’t function: coffee.

It’s a necessity. Always.

And a good, rich brew goes a long way in getting me in the right headspace before a ride. I recently tried a brand of coffee made just for horse girls: Happy Horse Coffee.

Available in light, medium and dark roasts, as well as flavored blends, Happy Horse Coffee comes in ground or whole-bean bags. The coffee is sourced from South America and Indonesia and each order is small-batch roasted in the Carolinas.

Plus Happy Horse Coffee is owned by a real life horse girl, Melissa, who competes in show jumping as an amateur under the instruction of Doug and Jessica Payne.

My favorite is the light roast called “Turn-N-Burn,” featuring a barrel racer cartoon on the logo, which is based on a real rider and horse close to the Happy Horse Coffee family. The Turn-N-Burn blend is a light roast with some really lovely citrus notes. Naturally, it’s inspired by “the energy of the barrel racer, and the clean finish makes it great to enjoy with pre-competition breakfast or as a midday pick-me up. This blend will have you staying sharp while hugging the barrels,” reads the Happy Horse Coffee website.

But if a robust, rich roast ain’t your thing, we highly recommend the “Start Box Blend,” a medium roast that is cookie crumble flavored. The Star Box Blend features a caricature of the one and only Doug Payne, the American Olympian himself, with his Pan American Games mount, Starr Witness. The cookie crumble flavor is made of a sugar-free mixture of graham cracker and cinnamon flavors. It offers a subtle sweetness without sacrificing the taste of a bold coffee.

Priced below $20 a bag, Happy Horse Coffee is a great gift for a barn bestie or a splurge for yourself. And the coffee tastes great, which is all that matters.
