Product Review: Free Ride PRO Equestrian Breech

I’ve lusted after a new pair of rust breeches for as long as I can remember. Maybe it’s the old-school hunter in me, that even after all these years and a few discipline switches later, there are just some old habits and preferences that have never left me. I’ve watched the slow, somewhat bubbling return of the rich “rust” color breech in recent years among my hunter and fox hunter friends and finally, I couldn’t take it anymore. I caved and bought a pair.

They were staring at me straight in the face inside Free Ride Equestrian’s vendor booth at the Terra Nova Equestrian Center this weekend. The warm, autumn rust color was the perfect shade, with a nice contrast of soft suede beige knee patches and piping on the rear pockets. I had to have them.

Free Ride Equestrian is a Florida-based, woman-owned small equestrian apparel business that’s become a game changer in terms of fit and comfort. Their tights and breeches are soft, but compression-based with technical, stretchy fabrics which offer flattering fits on just about any body type. I already own three pairs of their tights and breeches, which have stood up to many hot and sweaty rides in the show ring and at home. I’m also a super fan of their technical riding shirts – they’re dressy enough for the show ring or a clinic, but comfortable and easy enough to wear just about any time. I get compliments anywhere I go.

Priced at $120, the retro rust pair of Free Ride PRO breeches is reasonable for the quality. These breeches rival pairs that are far more expensive in durability and overall look. But they are so soft, airy and comfortable to wear. I find them to be true to size, but the brand suggests ordering up a size in the PRO line. They offer a high-waisted fit (my favorite) but the functional pockets are more similar to tights (the long pouch along the side of the thigh) instead of small pockets at the waist. They have belt loops so you can polish off your #ROOTD. But truly, the best quality in these breeches are the stretch and comfort of the sporty fabric. They can’t be beat.
