Just Say NO to Helmet Hair

You don’t need me to tell you that helmet hair is not cute. But what can you do to defeat it?

For thin hair: Add volume before you put your hair in a helmet. Flip your head upside down, spray hairspray with decent hold, let dry for a minute or so. Add helmet and go! When you remove your helmet, flip your head upside down again, froof it up, and voila!

For curly hair: Since most curly hair already has a fair amount of volume, you actually have it the easiest! Again, it’s all about embracing that volume—so right after removing your helmet, run your fingers close to your scalp (not breaking up the curls) and fluff gently.

For long hair: If you want to keep your hair pin-straight without any kinks after taking it out of your helmet…you’re out of luck. However, you can get relaxed beachy waves by putting your hair into the helmet properly. Gather your hair as if putting it into a low ponytail at the base of the neck, but do NOT secure it with a hair tie. Twist the “ponytail” tightly, then flip up over the top of your head and secure with the helmet. When you remove your helmet, the heat from your head will have created loose waves!

For bangs or short styles: Keep a travel-size bottle of dry shampoo in your grooming kit, and use it to fluff up any bits of hair that stick to your head when you remove your helmet.
