How To Clean The Grit & Grime Out Of Your Blingy Tack
Adding some bling to your tack can be a lot of fun for the fashionable equestrian. An emerald-studded browband or some crystals along the cantle of your dressage saddle can add some elegant touches to your overall turnout. But keeping those gems clean and sparkling while being stored in a horse barn is a whole other challenge.
Here are some tips on how to keep your “bling” glittering day in, day out.
Tools of the trade
Dirt and grime can build up in the small links of that crystal browband in no time. While the gems are embedded into the leather band, it’s important to remember they’re generally pretty flimsy. So you’ll want to avoid harsh cleaners (anything with bleach) and stiff sponges like brillo pads for cleaning.
One great tool is a children’s toothbrush, which is generally soft enough not to scratch the jewels, but effective enough to get out all the gunk. If not a children’s brush, you can give an old, worn out one in your house a second life. If you want to get creative, you can try recycling a mascara brush or soft eyebrow brush, too.
A damp, soft washcloth or even a phone screen wipe is also a good idea to have on hand.
Effective cleaners
A good tip to start is to be mindful of how you clean the actual leather of your blingy bridle and saddle. Saddle soaps and conditioners can add layers of film to your bowband or cantle design if you’re sloppy. Always go over those areas after a good leather cleaning with a damp cloth to keep them free from conditioner sheen.
Be mindful of the types of cleaners you use on these areas of your tack. We recommend dish soap or a baking soda solution (not too watery so it doesn’t get into the leather) and scrub with a toothbrush. Then wipe clean with a damp cloth.
It’s also important to remember that some of these pieces will likely tarnish over time, especially the metal clasps stringing the gems together. There’s just not much you can do about that. But the good news is, that’s the last thing the judge can see from the box while you’re riding your test!
