AMA: Why Is Core Strength Important For Horses?
I’m seeing a lot of riding exercises to build “core strength” in horses lately. Why is that so important?
“Core muscles are not only a bridge connecting the scapula and pelvis (front and hind end), they create suspension/elevation, allow for flexion and roundness, and are essential for straightness and balance.
It is important that the core not only be strong, but supple. A supple core is one that can bend comfortably, move energy efficiently through the body and create harmonious turns and smooth transitions.
A weak core can lead to a hard, stiff neck and mouth, an inverted back, and a horse falling on the forehand instead of pushing from behind.
While we generally think of the core as the muscles that run along the lower chain of the body, the upper chain – also known as the topline – is just as important.
The topline is considered the muscles that run along the top of the horse’s body from the poll to the hamstrings, propelling the horse forward and helping him to cover more ground.”
