Product Review: Amplify By Purina

When I first picked up my fresh off-the-track Thoroughbred gelding, Wyatt, he was round, fit and full of dapples. His condition was excellent. But it didn’t take long for him to lose that shine, and that muscle, as he transitioned to a less active lifestyle with a more sensible diet to support it. His coat looked dull and he lacked topline and definition. He seemed hollow in places. The change felt abrupt and fast, and had me worried that I was doing something wrong.

As it turned out, my ultra-fit racehorse needed more calories. Wyatt was a finicky eater in the beginning, especially when it came to forage. So it was a months-long battle to find what he liked and to start putting the pounds back on him. Along the way I stumbled upon a fat-based supplement from Purina in my feed store called Amplify.

Amplify is a supplement that can be served as a top dressing over feed to add a high-fat and low-starch serving to any meal. It’s marketed for competition horses, those being prepped for sale, breeding stallions and even lactating mares. With 30% fat from rice bran, flax seed and vegetable oils, it packs a high-calorie punch without ingredients that will add too much extra energy. It’s nutritionally balanced, so you don’t have to feed it in high volume to start seeing results. Plus it has so many great extras, including antioxidants like Vitamin E and a blend of fatty acids to give his coat a healthy bloom.

Even my skeptical eater Wyatt loves the taste so much so that he licks the bowl clean. Amplify comes in a variety of sizes. I bough the 50-pound bag and found that it last a long time. As the lush summertime grass begins to brown, Amplify is a staple in my feed routine through winter. It gives my horse the extra calories he needs and keeps him looking healthy and in top form.
