The December Issue Is Here: The Best of 2017

December is a very special issue of Heels Down Magazine: we’re recapping the best stories of 2017 from all walks of equestrian life. After all, we could all use a bit more inspiration as the year winds down and we look ahead to the next.

Kent Farrington has the keys to success. Even when he was in grade school, Kent was setting goals, a pattern that would make him the world’s number one-ranked show jumper 28 years later. We go in-depth with Kent, who shares his life story and philosophy, and he stresses the importance of remaining a student of the sport.

Irish event rider Jonty Evans successfully crowdfunded the purchase of his Olympic partner, Cooley Rorkes Drift this year – but the road to success wasn’t paved in gold.

Leslie Wylie turned heads and won hearts all over the world when she decided to tackle the infamous Mongol Derby this summer. What was it like coming home from the adventure of a lifetime on the Mongolian steppe?

Dressage rider Sönke Rothenberger is on top of the world at just age 23. For the former competitive downhill skier and show jumper, the switch to dressage paid off. In his Olympic debut in 2016, Sönke helped Germany secure a team gold medal. At this summer’s FEI European Championships, he finished second to Isabell Werth in the Grand Prix, the Special and the Freestyle, becoming dressage’s brightest new star.

Sixteen-year-old Mexican junior jumper Nicole Meyer had a whirlwind of a year, coming home with two medals from a successful trip to the 2017 NAJYRC. Hard work and preparation are the name of the game for Nicole, who shows us that perseverance pays off in spades.
