August Excerpt: Cleaning Out for Cash

By Sally Spickard

We’ve all got it: that tack trunk or closet (or garage or storage room – or all of the above) full of miscellaneous horse items that we swear will come in handy one day. Wouldn’t it be a shame to get rid of that Wonder Bit that your first off-track Thoroughbred loved? Nevermind that it hasn’t been used in a decade. Tomorrow might just be the day.

I hate to break it to you, but that’s hoarder mentality, folks.

We’re all a little bit skinny with our money, or at least a good portion of riders are. So why not take a few hours and clean out all of that stuff? In addition to simply clearing out space (it really makes you feel like you’re in control of your life, even if it’s a short-lived moment), you might find some gently-used items that you can part with for some cash to – wait for it – buy more stuff. Convinced?

Heels Down Magazine spoke with Brianna Jansen, 25, of Boston, Mass., who started selling gently-used tack and riding apparel online in 2013. What started as a side gig selling used items on Instagram has evolved into enough income to supplement Brianna’s eventing career.

“I decided to make an Instagram just for selling tack, and that took off,” she explained. “It’s a side job but it’s an impacting income.”
