Equestrian sport gets a bad rep sometimes because of how “stuffy” it can be. Steeped in tradition, our “butler outfits” don’t always exude the fact that we are actually working really hard in the saddle, and that our hobby of choice is indeed, a sport.

Some disciplines are better than others, about bending the rules a little and allowing some personal flair in the show ring. Heels Down Mag wants to give a shout out to these five equestrians who find a way to show off their unique style in the barn and in the saddle.

Equestrian Noire

If you aren’t following Jamillah Simms’ Equestrian Noire account on Instagram, you are really missing out. You’d never guess that Jamillah has only been riding horses for about a year. Working with the photographer, Janet Howard, the Equestrian Noire photoshoots combine culture and art with horses in an explosive way.

Chris Talley

Five-star event rider, Chris Talley is a breath of fresh air in the sport. Perhaps you remember his stand-out suit from the jog at the Kentucky Three-Day Event in 2019. Or that slick motto jacket and leather pants ensemble he wore. We love his style almost as much as he loves his OTTBs.

Marty Hunt

We first came across Marty’s Instagram account because he was sporting a gorgeous pair of rust breeches. This Raleigh, N.C., based rider won us over with his flair for all things vintage, including these 1960s inspired fox hunting looks.
